Dawsonville, Ga. was founded in 1859 and was named after William C. Dawson, a commander in the Creek Indian War of 1836 who went on to serve in both houses of the state legislature. He was also a member of congress before the Civil War. The 2010 census showed the population of Dawsonville to be 2,536, a 139% increase since the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Dawson County.
A wooden jail and log courthouse were two of the first buildings constructed in Dawsonville. The original courthouse was replaced in 1860 by the historic courthouse that still stands in the middle of town today. The jail was burned during an escape attempt and until 1881, when construction was complete on the historic jail, Dawsonville’s prisoners had to be housed in neighboring towns. Both buildings have been renovated to restore them to their original appearance and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
